As of October 2013, Lipitor side effect lawsuits filed in Illinois federal court had been consolidated before a single judge in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois, for the purposes of discovery and other pretrial proceedings. At the same time, a number of Lipitor diabetes claims were also being informally handled in a consolidated manner in U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina. In April 2013, plaintiffs in Lipitor lawsuits filed a petition with the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) seeking the creation of a single multidistrict litigation for all federally-filed Lipitor type 2 diabetes claims, but the request was denied. However, plaintiffs renewed their petition in October 2013, as the litigation surrounding Lipitor continued to grow.
